Adult Beginners: You Haven't Missed It

The most common thing an adult says on their first visit is some version of: I'm probably too old for this.

You're not. But the reason you're not isn't the one you're expecting.

What you're actually asking

When an adult says "am I too old," they usually mean: am I going to embarrass myself in front of people who are better than me?

Yes. For a while. Everyone does, at every age. A sixteen-year-old who's been here two years will make you look slow, and there's no version of starting where that doesn't happen.

The people who last are the ones who decide that's fine.

What adults are actually good at

Adults learn technique faster than kids. You can hear a correction, understand why it matters, and apply it the same session. That's a real advantage and it shows up early.

You'll be behind on reflexes and ahead on comprehension. Over a year, comprehension wins more often than people think.

What we'll ask of you

Consistency over intensity. Two sessions a week for a year beats five sessions a week for a month, every time, and the second pattern is the one that ends in an injury.

Tell us the truth about your body. Old knee, bad shoulder, back that goes out — we coach around all of it, but only if we know.

Let go of the idea that you should already be able to do this. You're learning a skill. That's the whole point.

Do you have to compete?

No. Plenty of our adults train without ever entering a bout, and there's no lesser tier for them — same coaching, same standard.

But some do compete, and adult amateur boxing is a real thing with real divisions. If you want it, the door isn't closed. Leonard will tell you honestly whether you're close.

If you're already a fighter

We also work with professionals. Leonard came up training alongside Michael Nunn and Antwun Echols and has been in the corner at that level. If you're preparing for something serious, that's a different conversation and a different rate.

What it costs

Adults are $75 a month. Professionals are $50 a week. That covers coaching, gym access during posted hours, and corner support at sanctioned events for anyone competing.

How to start

Come watch a session. Talk to Leonard. Don't buy gear first — half of it will be wrong, and we'll tell you what you actually need once you've been on the floor.
